USA To Start With Their Own IPL-Like Version
The USA Cricket Association (USACA) has announced that it will soon launch an IPL-like professional cricket league and has begun work to outline the that very plan. It has been reported that the USACA will be looking for partners to enable it to launch the tournament.
The USACA has appointed Nigel Rushman, Chairman of Rushmans ,to serve as commercial advisor to USACA, or in other words as the sports management firm to manage the whole thing. Rushmans is a UK-based firm have been associated with some of the major cricketing events as well, like the 2007 World Cup of cricket.
According to a media list on the website of Rushmans, the USACA is looking for partners to get corporate sponsorships, development and management of cricketing events in the USA, implementing an IPL-like professional league, negotiating TV and radio rights, and even developing and managing a cricket website for the tournament and a social networking medium to get the fans going as well.
The USA has been tipped as one of the most viable markets to spread cricket, what with the kind of Asian expat population in that country. Earlier there had been talks of Lalit Modi, the chairman of the IPL to host a parallel and a smaller IPL in the USA, but with the US coming out with their own version of the tournament, it remains to be seen whether any such dreams will work out.

GANGULY BACK AS A CAPTAIN OF KOLKATTA KNIGHT RIDERS
Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly is likely to lead the Kolkata Knight Riders in the third edition of the Indian Premier League.
Ganguly led in the inaugural tournament in 2008, but was controversially replaced in 2009 by Brendon McCullum - a decision that the then coach John Buchanan made.
Ganguly met franchise owner Shahrukh Khan in England when he was there to watch the ICC World Twenty20 Championship, and they discussed the captaincy as well as the appointment of a new coach for the team for the next season of the twenty20 tournament.
According to sources, the KKR management would like to announce the decision later, sometime in the middle of August once the new coach is appointed.
Even as an official announcement is awaited, sources said that there could be a major reshuffle with former India coach Wright likely to replace John Buchanan as the Knight Riders coach, while former Australian middle-order batsman Michael Bevan will be on the coaching panel.
The decision has likely come about because the two other best suited candidates for captaincy - Brendon McCullum and Ricky Ponting - will both be on national duty, since New Zealand and Australia are slated to play each other during the IPL.

Pathan vs Pathan
The brothers from Baroda would draw swords against each other in today's match, much to the delight of the Newlands crowd. While the older Pathan, Yusuf is carrying the tag of a 'Super Over Hero' to the match, Irfan's three wicket haul against Bangalore helps him match up to his brother. The allround skills of both brothers would be put to test when they face eachother in the match between Kings XI Punjab vs Rajasthan Royals in South Africa.
Super over in T20
On April 23– Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals combined to provide a nail-biting game. The match was tied after both side scored 150 runs in their allotted 20 overs. The super over is a bit of a lottery and Rajasthan were lucky that, on the day, Yusuf Pathan outsmarted the equally destructive Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum to keep the defending champions’ hopes of progressing in the tournament alive.
While the super over is an exciting addition, the problem with it is that it is excessively time-consuming and can get frustrating. Only 12 deliveries (or less) have to be bowled to decide the result. However a lot of time is consumed in between. Of course the teams cannot be blamed as, unlike the penalty shootout in soccer, the players here have to get their equipments in place and also plan out the field placings. Add to it, the concept is very much in the nascent stage. Still a time-limit needs to be set for a super over.

‘Time out’ will harm IPL
As it is, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is under a cloud with the tournament being ‘voted’ out of India. And now to add to the woes, the organizers have added an ‘innovation’ wherein there will be a seven-and-a-half minute break after 10 overs are completed during each innings. During this interval, the fans present inside the stadium will be kept busy by a live band while those watching the game on television will be exposed to three, separate two-and-a-half minute segments, not surprisingly two of them sold commercially.
While one of the three sections will feature mainstream advertising, the second will showcase special projects. Expect to watch a series of short films on African children and the importance of education. In the third segment, the sides will be shown taking drinks and discussing ‘tactics’ in an effort to make it seem like a legitimate ‘time out’. It is understandable that the organizers will have plenty of money using the ‘time out’. However, the poor viewers both at home and in the stadium are only expected to get frustrated.
One of the biggest reasons behind the success of the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League was its fast paced, near non-stop action. Thus, all the ‘time out’ can do is harm the chances of IPL 2’s success.
2000 seconds of advertising space has to be crammed into every match. This literally means 40 seconds of advertising after every over and 60 seconds at the fall of a wicket. Don’t be surprised if you miss out on some crucial moments of a match owing to an advertisement by a major brand.
Biggies like Ricky Ponting, Michael Hussey and Michael Clarke have already pulled out of the tournament and with the matches being held in South Africa, there will be a big question mark over the crowd support. The home and away advantage has already been affected following the change in venue. Having faced so many troubles one wonders whether the latest experiment is needed at the cost of viewers’ interest. Undoubtedly, the men behind IPL must be making more than enough money even during times of recession. By allowing the rapid-fire game to slow down, the organizers are risking turning a success formula into a disaster. IPL fans deserve better.

IPL games introduce 'strategy breaks' of 15 minutes
Games will now take longer with the introduction of a 'time out' but there will be no action at all during the added time.
Fans who have become accustomed to Twenty20 matches lasting just three hours are in for a surprise during the second season of the IPL - they will now last three-and-a-quarter hours. Part of the appeal of the shortest form of the game is the non-stop action but IPL games will now take longer and there will be no action at all during the added time.
The IPL are planning to market the added time as an 'innovation' by calling it a tactical 'time out' but the fact that each innings will now come to a halt for seven-and-a-half minutes after exactly 10 overs makes it neither tactical nor, indeed, practical.
The seven-and-a-half minute break will see the stadium crowd entertained by a live band while television audiences will watch three, separate two-and-a-half minute segments, two of which will be sold commercially. The third will show the teams taking drinks and discussing 'tactics' to add some validity to the argument for the 'time out.'
While one section will be compulsory, mainstream advertising, the other will be set aside for 'special projects'. Queen Rania of Jordan, well known for her agenda of social reform and progression, will lead the way with a series of short films aimed at African children expounding the importance of education.
The IPL can justifiably claim that the project is well intentioned and for a good cause. And at approximately $1million per episode, it's also very lucrative. There are 118 two-and-half minute slots for sale.
The second reserved for advertising.Production teams have also been told that they need to fit 2000 seconds (around 33 minutes) of advertising into every match, a task described by a different member of the production team as "virtually impossible."
The reason also behind the 'strategy break' was that players were going back and forth with messages and there was a lot of strategy being decided from time to time in last season of IPL.
So it’s going to tighten those extremely as far as overs are concerned, time of overs is concerned and time of play is concerned.
The league commissioner revealed that IPL will do so by imposing stiff financial penalties on fielding sides if they go over the time allocated for bowling their overs.
The first penalty for the captain is 20,000 dollars for a first offence. For the second offence the entire team gets penalised 20,000 - that's 220,000 (in total). For the third offence the captain gets banned for a game and the team gets penalised 360,000.
The IPL starts Saturday with a double-header at Newlands.
