INDIA BEAT SRI LANKA IN THE FIRST ODI

MR.COOL MAHENDRA SINGH DHONI'S OUTSTANDING BATTING DISPLAY OF 61 RUNS NOT OUT FROM 65 BALLS GUIDED INDIAN TEAM TO REGISTER THEIR SIX WICKET WIN OVER SRI LANKA IN THE FIRST ODI AT RANGIRI STADIUM, DAMBULLA ON WEDNESDAY.WITH THIS WIN,INDIA HAS TAKEN 1-0 LEAD AGAINST SRI LANKA IN THE 5 MATCH ODI SERIES.WITH THE HELP OF THE HALF CENTURIES FROM GAMBHIR,RAINA AND DHONI, INDIA SUCCESSFULLY CHASED THE HIGHEST TOTAL IN THE DAY GAME AT DAMBULLA.SPECTACULAR 28TH CENTURY FROM SANATH JAYASURIYA WENT IN VAIN.

EARLIAR,DHONI WON THE TOSS AND WITHOUT ANY HASITATION, PUT SRI LANKA IN TO BAT.SRI LANKA HAD A DISASTEROUS START.THE HERO OF THE LAST SERIES DILSHAN WAS RUN OUT FOR 0.THEN JAYASURIYA AND SANGAKARA STEADIED THE SRI LANKAN INNING, BY PROVIDING 118 RUNS PARTNERSHIP FOR THE SECOND WICKET,BEFORE SANGAKARA GOT OUT IN PRAGYAN OZA'S BOWLING,SCORING 44 RUNS OF 86 BALLS.

SANATH JAYASURIYA WENT ON TO SCORE HIS 28TH CENTURY.HE ALSO BECAME THE SECOND BATSMAN AFTER SACHIN TO SCORE 13,000 RUNS IN ODIS.HE PLAYED SHOTS ALL OVER IN THE GROUND.HE HIT 10 FOURS AND ONE HUGE SIX DURING HIS SPECTACULAR KNOCK OF 107 RUNS.AT THE AGE OF 39 YEARS AND 212 DAYS,HE ALSO BECAME THE OLDEST CRICKETER TO SCORE AN ODI CENTURY.

AFTER SCORING 107 RUNS,JAYASURIYA GOT OUT ON ZAHEER'S SLOWER FULL TOSS.ZAHEER AND ISHNT SHARMA BOWLED SUPERBLY.ISHANT TOOK 3 WICKETS.SRI LANKAN WICKETS WERE FALLING ON QUICK SUCCESIONS.MAHELA JAYWARDANE'S FLOP SHOW CONTINUED.FINALLY SRI LANKA MANAGED TO REACH A RESPECTABLE TOTAL OF 246 RUNS AT THE COST OF 7 WICKETS.

IN REPLY,INDIA STARTED THE INNING WITH SACHIN AND GAMBHIR,AS SEHWAG WAS NOT PLAYING THE MATCH DUE TO HIP INJURY.INDIA TOO HAD A DISATEROUS START.SACHIN WAS GIVEN OUT ERRONEOSLY BY THE DEBUTANT UMPIRE KUMAR DHARAMSENA.AFTER THAT GAMBHIR AND RAINA STABILIZED THE INNING BY BUILDING SOLID AND AGGRESSIVE PARTNERSHIP OF 112 RUNS.GAUTAM GAMBHIR AGAIN SHOWED HIS CONSISTANCY AND EXCELLANT FORM BY SCORING 62 RUNS OF 68 BALLS.SURESH RAINA SCORED 54 RUNS OF 68 BALLS,PROVING HIS TALENT.WHEN THESE TWO WELL SET BATSMEN GOT OUT IN QUICK SUCCESION,DHONI AND YUVRAJ HAD THE RESPOSIBILITY TO GUIDE INDIA TO THE TARGET.BUT YUVRAJ COULD NOT STAND ON THE CREEZE FOR A LONG TIME.HE FAILED TO PLAY A LONG INNING.SO ALL THE RESPONSIBILITY WAS ON DHONI'S SHOULDERS.

DHONI PLAYED A SENSIBLE INNING.IN HIS INNING OF 61 RUNS OF 65 BALLS,HE SCORED FIVE BOUNDARIES,BUT 2 OF THEM CAME AFTER INDIA WAS ABOUT TO WIN.HE TOOK 27 SINGLES AND SEVEN TWOS.HIS CAPTAIN INNING, GUIDED INDIA TO REGISTER 6TH CONSECUTIVE ODI VICTORY.HE REMAINED UNBEATEN LIKE A TRUE FINISHER.ROHIT SHARMA GAVE HIM A GOOD SUPPORT.

INDIA-SRI LANKA SERIES:PREVIEW

India will play first ODI of the 5 match ODI Series against Sri Lanka at Rangiri stadium,Dambulla on 28th january. They beat England 5-0 in November 2008 and had an impressive 3-2 series win in Sri Lanka.
India were clueless against the mysterious of Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis in the Test series last year, but tackled them well in the ODI Series.
Sri Lanka have won six of their last seven ODI series, but not convincingly. The batting struggled against Zimbabwe and they lost a match to Bangladesh recently. But the excellant series win against Pakistan in pakistan will provide them a good confidence against India.
Nuwan Kulasekara had a fantastic 2008 in ODI cricket. Kulasekara has become Sri Lanka's premier quick bowler in this format. he was really successfull against india.
When India toured Sri Lanka last, Mahendra Singh Dhoni had a difficult time with Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar absent and the top order struggling. Dhoni and Suresh Raina had to do almost all work. But this time Indian team looks much stronger side, with Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar both fit.
Ajantha Mendis, who recently became the quickest bowler to take 50 ODI wickets. But Pakistan's batsmen handled him efficiently. On the favourable home pitches, Mendis will always be a factor. Sachin Tendulkar has never faced Mendis in an ODI. Injury ruled him out of the last contest in Sri Lanka but his return will boost India's top order.
