-Gambhir had been a prolific run-scorer in domestic cricket with an average of over 50.
-He first made an impact in India when Zimbabwe toured early in 2002, he managed an amazing successive double-century, one for Delhi and another for the Board Presidents' XI against the visitors. This made him only the fourth Indian batsman to score a double century in a tour game at home.
-Gambhir made his ODI debut against Bangladesh in the TVS Cup in 2003 and was named Man of the Match in his third game after scoring 71.
-His maiden ODI century came against Sri Lanka in 2005, where he got 103 off 97 balls.
-Gambhir got a call-up into India's Test squad for the fourth Test against Australia at Mumbai, in 2004-05. His first test century was scored against Bangladesh.
