Debut: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Kandy, 1994

- The most successful opening bowler in Sri Lankan history, he recently passed the 300-wicket milestone in his 90th Test Match, having already achieved the feat in one-day cricket.

- His devastating spell of 8/19 including a hat-trick against Zimbabwe in 2001 routed them for 38, and these remain the best bowling figures in one-day internationals.

- He claimed another hat-trick, this time with the first three balls of the match against Bangladesh in the 2003 World Cup. Went on to be top wicket taker in the tournament.

- In 2004 he was selected for the World Test and one-day XI at the inaugural ICC Awards. He was once again selected for the World Test XI at the 2005 awards.
