Clyde Walcott (1948-1960)

Clyde Walcott was a powerful middle-order batsman for West Indies. He was a particularly strong driver off either foot. In the first half of his career he was a wicket-keeper good enough to take 11 Test stumpings. Later he become more of a medium-pace bowler and took 11 Test wickets. In 1955 he became the first man to hit five centuries in a Test series.

This was against Australia at home and he amassed 827 runs at 82.70 in the series. In his previous Test series, against England in 1954, he scored 698 runs at an average of 87.25. In 1946, aged just 20, he shared one of the highest partnerships in all first-class cricket with Frank Worrell when the pair added 574* for Barbados against Trinidad at Port-of-Spain. He spent many years in administration, including managing West Indies teams and becoming Chairman of the ICC. He was knighted in 1994.
